3rd Mammoth Bed - Saturday, July 2, 2016I recently purchased my 6 year old Golden Retriever her third Mammoth bed. They have been purchased over time, and all three are in service with one at home, one at camp, and one in our truck…..she is just a little bit spoiled. From all of the dog beds that I have tried, they are the best quality for the price! For my most recent purchase, I ordered it on a Sunday and it was delivered to my door on Wednesday. They wash very well! The mattress on the oldest one which is at camp and is approximately 5 years old is only now starting to need a bit of TLC from Brandy as she nests to get comfy, but that’s OK as I will simply rotate the beds by bringing the oldest one to camp. I started with a donut bed, tried the oblong/orthopedic mattress for the second, and have gone back to the donut for the third. Brandy can either stretch out or snuggle up on the donut bed and it seems to be her favorite.

XL Oblong Memory Foam - Saturday, July 2, 2016My golden retriever has a very long body and was always too big for the biggest beds you could find in a pet shop, so I decided to give a Mammoth bed a try for her so she could fit her whole body on her bed. And she can easily stretch out and have plenty of room on her Mammoth bed. She absolutely loves it! She is nearly 12 years old and has some arthritis in her hips and back so we wanted to give her a memory foam bed that would be comfortable for achy joints. When we go on trips and have to leave her bed at home, the second we get home she runs to her bed and lays down in it. She is in it so much we have lovingly named it her life boat, because it kind of looks like a raft and she loves it like her life depends on it. We are even thinking of buying her a second mammoth bed so that she can have one for downstairs and for upstairs. Casey thanks you for her mammoth bed!

Origin of Golden Retriever
The original name of the breed was Yellow Retriever which was later adopted to the Golden Retriever. This breed was developed in Britain in the 1800’s and is thought to be breed with the Newfoundland Retriever, Tweed Retriever, Irish Setter and variety of water Spaniels. Often credited for the development of the Golden Retriever, Lord Tweedmouth, sought to create a new breed of retriever. To accomplish this, he crossed a Wavy-Coated Retriever with a Tweed Water Spaniel. The mix created a long-coated breed, with a dense inner coat that provides them with adequate warmth in the outdoors, and an outer coat that lies flat against their bodies and repels water. The Golden Retriever became quite popular with British nobility not only for its hunting and retrieving abilities, but because it was such a great companion. The ultimate goal was to develop a hunting breed that was big enough and had the endurance to hunt and retrieve a large number of game birds at a time unharmed. It is an excellent bird dog, and considered to excel in both land and water retrieval. The breed is so eager to please that it also makes an excellent search and rescue dog. This breed has gained much popularity in America since it’s introduction in 1912. And is considered the second most popular breed.
Temperament
The Golden retriever is the model American family dog. They love to please and are happy just to be with their family, they love children and are very gentle, playful and patient. They enjoy being with people and are far from a watch dog, they even enjoy strangers. Socializing and playing is their specialty, they get along with all animals. They are fantastic swimmers, as this is what they were breed for, and can play fetch all day if you are willing. They are on of the top breeds used for assistance or guide dogs for th blind. lt is reported that at the guide dog training schools there are fewer rejects among Golden Retrievers than there are for any other breed.

Fun Facts
Did you know The Golden Retriever holds two Guinness World Records. One was set by a Golden named Charlie for the loudest bark in the world at a whopping 113.1 decibels. As a comparison, a chainsaw is 110 decibels. Imagine waking up to that every morning!
The second is a Golden Retriever named Augie who holds the title for most tennis balls held in the mouth by a dog at 5 regulation sized tennis balls. Now that’s dedication!
Training Tips
The Golden Retriever is a social breed, so socialization straight from puppyhood is best. They need to experience all sorts of sounds, people, animals and behaviors. An unsocialized Golden Retriever does not fair well and often develops separation anxiety when left alone for longer periods. This breed loves people and other animals and is a real social breed, so get them out socializing.
The Golden Retriever is one of the most intelligent breeds and needs regular outdoor activity and stimulation. They learn very quickly and love to please their handler, which makes learning new skills easier. They are a breed that gets bored with regular repetition but responds very well with positive reinforcement and reward stimuli, such as treats. They love food, and will do just about anything for a cookie or two.
